Quarry Trail: OPEN For Business!

Despite the menacing weather last night trailwork was on.  We had a small group but finally succeeded in finishing the Quarry Trail to the point that it is now open.

Quarry Trail Reroute
Roger worked with a small group to finish up the reroute bench cutting and also did some cleanup between the new reroute section and the North entrance to the trail.

Quarry Trail North Entrance
Aaron was the crew leader for cleaning up the remnants of the mechanized work we finished a few weeks ago.  We also created a new entrance route from Hwy FA that is safer and more sustainable than before.

There is still some work to do with the Ditch Witch on the bermed turn near the North entrance and we will be putting up new signs on the trail soon.

Trail Conditions
With all the rain we have been getting (which is expected to continue), the trails are pretty soft right now.  Please use your best judgment when deciding when to ride, or what trails to ride. The Green Prairie Loop trails are usually the driest, the Blue trails usually take about a day to dry and the Black trails stay wet the longest (usually 2 days) since they are further down in the valleys, see the most moisture and are less exposed to the sun and wind.

All the trails will usually dry up within a day or two, so please wait long enough to allow them to firm up following a heavy rain.

Work smarter, not harder...

Aaron_DW2.jpgLast Friday & Saturday Jackie Yocum from Trail Design Specialists  came to HPT to train Mike, Aaron and myself on using the Ditch Witch to create shared use singletrack trails.   I think we all came away with the knowledge and skills to create some of the best trails yet!  Thanks Jackie!

We worked both days on the North entrance to the Quarry Trail.  It now features some fun winding trail including a burmed turn that still needs some work with the Ditch Witch.  We also have some clean up to do on the outslope of the trail.

Trailwork for Thur - May 29
Matt K, Frenchy and I may not be at trailwork tomorrow.  We are going to a chainsaw safety certification class all day in Black River Falls.  It's pretty unlikely that we'll be back in time after putting in another full HPT day.

However, there will still be trailwork.
Meet at the Quarry entrance, at the end of Cty Hwy FA - Work starts at 5:30pm.
Aaron Schmidt will be the Dirt Boss and lead the effort.
-----------------------
There are 3 tasks that need work this week...
Priority 1) Finish the Quarry Trail Reroute. (crew leaders: Roger, Matt D)
Priority 2) Clean up the trail outslope from the mechanized work. (crew leader: Aaron S).
Priority 3) Continue clearing corridor on the 2008 Trail. (?)
-----------------------
PRIZES!
For those of you that weren't at trailwork last week, HPT had our first trailwork giveaway!  We will now have a raffle at the end of each workday

Big thanks to Smiths Cycling and WORBA for providing the prizes!

Make way for 2008...

This Thursday, May 22 @ 5:30pm we will start to work on clearing the corridor for the 2008 Trail that Bob and Matt K marked last week.  We may also have a few areas to "touch up" on the existing trail system.

Don't forget that we will meet at the Quarry Entrance at the end of Hwy FA.  Once you get to the HPT Parking Lot, keep going North on Hwy FA, past Rim of the City Road – to the dead end (about a half mile) see map below.
